Ibn al‐'Arabī

Islamic mystic. Born in Murcia in southern Spain, he traveled religiously in North Africa and Western Asia before dying in Damascus. His cosmological theosophy, based on an ontological philosophy of knowledge, has had such a profound influence on later generations that it is said to have determined the spiritual landscape of the Islamic world since his birth. For him, all aspects of natural phenomena, revelations, and spiritual phenomena were viewed as symbols that serve as a means of the self-disclosure of the transcendent One (God). Through the gradual deepening of the recognition and interpretation of these symbols, the aspects of existence of various phenomena appear closer to the truth, as if a veil covering a light source had been removed.

イスラム神秘思想家。南スペインのムルシアに生まれ，北アフリカ，西アジアに宗教的遍歴生活を続けたのちダマスクスで没した。その存在論的認識哲学を骨格とした宇宙論的神智学は，彼以後のイスラム世界の精神的地貌を決定したといわれるほどに後世に深い影響を与えている。彼にとって，自然現象･啓示･精神現象の諸相は，すべて超越的唯一者〈神〉の自己開示の手段としての象徴として見据えられる。これらの象徴の認識と解釈の段階的深化を通じて，諸現象の存在の相は，あたかも光源を覆うベールが取り去られるように，より真相に近い姿を現してくる。
