Ibn al‐'Awwām

An Arab agronomist and botanist active in Seville, Andalusia, at the end of the 12th century. His birth and death years and career are unknown. His work, Kitab al-filāḥa (Book of Agriculture), is a 35-volume compilation of the research of Andalusian agronomists and botanists such as Ibn Bassar (died 1105) and Ibn Hajjaj (11th-early 12th century). It also describes in detail the cultivation and farming methods for 588 cultivated plants. It attracted attention in Europe early on and was translated into Spanish (1802) and French (1864-67).

12世紀末にアンダルスのセビリャで活躍したアラブ系の農学･植物学者。生没年･経歴は不詳。その著《農学の書Kitāb al‐filāḥa》は，イブン･バッサール(1105没)やイブン･ハッジャージュ(11～12世紀初め)などアンダルスの農学･植物学者の研究の集大成で，35巻からなる。また，それは588種の栽培植物について，その栽培と耕作の方法を具体的に述べている。ヨーロッパでは早くから注目され，スペイン語(1802)やフランス語(1864‐67)に訳されている。
