Also called dehydrogenase. A type of oxidoreductase. A general term for enzymes that catalyze the dehydrogenation of organic compounds. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), its phosphate ester (NADP), cytochrome, etc. act as hydrogen atom acceptors. For example, alcohol dehydrogenase converts alcohol into aldehyde and simultaneously converts NAD into reduced NAD. Depending on the substrate that serves as the hydrogen donor for this enzyme, (1) as the donor (oxidation of alcohol to ketone) (2) Aldehyde dehydrogenase using -CHO as a donor (oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids) (3) Galactolactone dehydrogenase using as a donor (formation of unsaturated bonds) (4) Glutamate dehydrogenase with Glutamate as donor (oxidative deamination) etc. Source: Morikita Publishing "Chemical Dictionary (2nd Edition)" Information about the Chemical Dictionary 2nd Edition |
