Swedish poet. His collection of sonnets, 14 lines written in capital letters and without punctuation, The Pathless (1942), surprised readers with its unusual form and the incomprehensibility of its content. The abruptness and dissonance of the images evoked by his poems gradually diminishes in his later poetry collections, Attendants (1947) and Winter's Sacrifices (1954), in which a kind of musicality can be sensed, but they remain difficult to understand. He was elected a member of the Academy in 1962. [Tanaka Michio]

スウェーデンの詩人。大文字，句読点なしの14行詩(ソネット)集《道なき人》(1942)はその奇抜な形式と内容の難解さで読者を驚かせた。彼の詩が呼び起こすイメージの唐突さ，不協和な印象は，後期の詩集《随員》(1947)，《冬の犠牲》(1954)ではしだいに減じて一種の音楽性が感じとれるというが，難解であることに変りはない。1962年アカデミー会員に選出された。【田中三千夫】
