A state in the western United States. Abbreviated as Colo., CO. The western half is a continuous series of high mountains and basins belonging to the Rocky Mountains, while the eastern half is the Great Plains, with vast ranches and wheat fields. The entire state is over 1000m above sea level, with the highest peak being Mount Elbert (4398m). Cattle and sheep grazing and wheat cultivation are popular, and agricultural product processing industries can be found throughout the state. The state is also blessed with minerals such as gold, molybdenum, uranium, oil, and coal. There are many tourist destinations, such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Mesa Verde National Park. The eastern half of the state became part of the United States at the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and the western half became part of the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War in 1848. It is called the "Centennial State" because it joined the Union 100 years after the Declaration of Independence (1876). The state capital is Denver. 268,431 ^km2 . 5,355,866 people (2014).
