Japanese: ムシガレイ(虫鰈) - ムシガレイ（英語表記）shotted halibut

A marine fish of the family Pleuronectidae in the order Pleuronectiformes. One genus, one species. Found along the coasts of Japan, the Yellow Sea, and the East China Sea. The right side of the body, the eyed side, is light brown with scattered light brown ring-shaped spots of various sizes, and the spots that form pairs of three across the lateral line are particularly large and distinct. The spawning season is from January to March, and the main spawning group is composed of fish that are 4 years old or older. Some broods contain more than 1 million eggs. The eggs are separate pelagic eggs about 0.85 to 1.3 mm in diameter, and hatch in about 3 days at a water temperature of 14°C. After hatching, they undergo metamorphosis when they reach about 13 mm.

カレイ目カレイ科の海産魚。1属1種。日本各地の沿岸，黄海，東シナ海に分布する。体の右側が有眼側で淡褐色をなし，大小の淡褐色の輪紋斑が散在し，とくに側線をはさんで3個ずつ対をなす斑紋は大きくて明りょうである。産卵期は1～3月で，主産卵群は4年魚以上で構成される。1腹の卵数は100万粒を超えるものもある。卵は直径約0.85～1.3mmの分離浮性卵で，水温14℃において約3日で孵化（ふか）する。孵化後，約13mmになると変態する。
