(2) In the Kanchiin Honmyōgishō, the character for “grandchild” is written as “mumako” (in higashigo), which suggests that this character was no longer common in the central area during the late Heian or Kamakura periods.

ひ‐こ【孫】

〘名〙 子の子。まご。うまご。〔二十巻本和名抄(934頃)〕[語誌](1)コ(子)にヒを冠したものと考えられ、類例にヒヒコ(曾孫)などがあり、ヒは一代隔てた親族をあらわすと思われる。
(2)「観智院本名義抄」には「孫」字に「ムマコ 鄙語云ヒコ」とあって、平安時代末期ないし鎌倉時代、中央では一般的でなくなっていたようである。
