Troilite is a stoichiometric iron(II) sulfide. Troilite is known to coexist in pyrrhotite, a nonstoichiometric iron(II) sulfide with iron or iron deficiency (Fe _{1- x} S) in the Earth's crust, but only in very small amounts. The lead isotope ratio ( ²⁰⁶ Pb/ ²⁰⁴ Pb) and sulfur isotope ratio ( ³² S/ ³⁴ S) of troilite found in meteorites and iron meteorites are used to determine the age of the Earth and geological dating.

の化学量論的硫化鉄(Ⅱ)である．トロイライトは，地殻中では鉄または鉄原子が欠損した非化学量論的硫化鉄(Ⅱ)(Fe_1－xS)の磁硫鉄鉱(ピロータイト，pyrrhotite)中に共存することが知られているが，ごくわずかにしか存在しない．いん石やいん鉄中に見いだされるトロイライトの鉛同位体比(²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pb)や硫黄同位体比(³²S/³⁴S)は地球の年齢測定や地質年代測定に利用される．
