Hothouse millipede

Japanese: ヤケヤスデ - やけやすで（英語表記）hothouse millipede

A millipede (illustration) of the Diplopoda class (class Millipedes) and family Polypedidae. It is a typical example and is the most commonly found around houses. It is about 2cm long and its back is a burnt black-brown color, hence its name. It has a pair of antennae on its head but no eyes. Its body has 20 segments, its dorsal plate is slightly raised, and both edges are yellow only on the eaves that protrude like awnings. Its abdomen and 31 pairs of walking legs (males have 30 pairs) are yellowish-white. When startled by something, it curls up into a spiral shape and releases an unpleasant odor from scent pores on the edges of the eaves to defend itself.

倍脚綱(ヤスデ綱)ヤケヤスデ科のヤスデ（イラスト）。住宅のまわりでもっともふつうに見られる代表的な種類。体長約2cm前後で背が焼けたように黒褐色なのでこの名がある。頭に1対の触角があるが眼はない。胴は20胴節があり，背板はわずかに凸隆し，両縁はひさしのようにつき出ている側庇（そくひ）の部分のみ黄色。腹部と31対(雄は30対)の歩肢は黄白色。ものに驚くと渦巻状にまるくなり，側庇縁にある臭孔から不快なにおいを出して防御する。
