[Died] March 18, 2017. American pop musician from Missouri. His real name was Charles Edward Anderson Berry. He started his musical career in 1952 with a blues band. In 1955, he produced his first record, Maybellene. He created a style of rock music with a fresh melody that mixed blues and country and western, and a guitar style with unique riffs that left a strong impression, and he is called the "father of rock music" and the "god of rock music." In addition, his lyrics consciously avoided blues-like elements, and instead expressed the lives and feelings of American middle-class teenagers using clever double meanings, which earned him support from many young people across races. He is famous for his "duck walk" on stage. His hit songs include "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957), and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958), which was included on the record "Sounds of the Earth" aboard Voyager 1. He also had a major influence on later musicians, such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Born August 14, 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the first African-American to win an Academy Award for Best Actress in Monster's Ball (2001). As a teenager, she was a finalist in several beauty pageants, and after working as a model, she began appearing on television in 1989. She gained attention for her roles in Jungle Fever (1991) directed by Spike Lee and Boomerang (1992) starring Eddie Murphy. She won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role in the TV movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999). She also appeared in action scenes in X-Men (2000) and its sequels (2003, 2006), Swordfish (2001), and the James Bond film Die Another Day (2002). Her first film roles were in the horror films Gothika (2003) and Catwoman (2004).

Bury

A city in the north of Greater Manchester, north-central England, England. It is part of the Bury district. It is located about 15km north-northwest of Manchester, along the River Irwell and the canal that connects Manchester, Boulton and Bury. It was formed on the site of an Anglo-Saxon garrison, and its name comes from the Anglo-Saxon (→ Old English) word burgh, or burh, which means fortress. It began to develop in the 14th century, when immigrants from Flanders started to make woolen textiles in the reign of Edward III. In the 18th century, the cotton industry developed, and John Kay, famous for inventing the flying shuttle, was active in the city. The textile industry is still important today, but there are many other industries, such as paper-making machinery and metalworking. Area: 99 ^km2 . Area population: 182,100 (2004 estimate). Urban population: 60,718 (2001).

American ophthalmologist and Protestant missionary. He came to Japan in 1872 as a member of the Congregationalist American Overseas Missionary Service, and was active as a missionary doctor in western Japan, opening clinics throughout the country, mainly in Kobe. In 1885, at the request of Niijima Jo, he became director of Doshisha Hospital, where he opened the Kyoto Nurses School, setting a precedent for nursing education in Japan. He also contributed to the improvement of Japan's prison system. He returned to the United States in 1893 and opened a medical practice in Massachusetts.

A region in central France. Former province. Includes the departments of Cher and Indre, and parts of the departments of Loiret, Indre-et-Loire, and Creuse. Its capital is Bourges. A livestock farming region irrigated by the Cher and Indre rivers. During the Carolingian dynasty, it became an independent hereditary county, sold to King Philip I of France in 1101, and made an appanage (royal fief) by King John II of France in 1360. Prince John de France became Duke of Berry and mediated in the Hundred Years' War. It was annexed to the royal domain in 1601.

イギリス，イングランド中北部，グレーターマンチェスター地域北部の都市。ベリー地区を構成する。マンチェスターの北北西約 15kmにあり，アーウェル川と，マンチェスター―ボールトン―ベリー間を結ぶ運河に沿う。アングロ・サクソン人の駐屯地があったところに形成された町で，市名はアングロ・サクソン語（→古期英語）で要塞を意味する burg，あるいは burhに由来。14世紀のエドワード3世の時代にフランドルからの来住者によって毛織物工業が行なわれるようになってから発展し始め，18世紀には綿工業が発達，飛杼（とびひ）の発明者として有名なジョン・ケイも市で活躍した。今日でも繊維工業は重要であるが，製紙機械，金属など多くの工業が立地する。地区面積 99km²。地区人口 18万2100（2004推計）。都市人口 6万718（2001）。

アメリカの眼科医，プロテスタント宣教師。会衆派の「アメリカ海外宣教師派遣会」に属して明治5 (1872) 年来日，西日本で宣教医として活躍，神戸を中心に全国各地に診療所を開いた。また 1885年，新島襄の求めで同志社病院の院長となり，同院に京都看病婦学校を開設し，日本の看護教育の先鞭をつけた。さらに日本の監獄制度の改良にも貢献した。 93年アメリカへ帰り，マサチューセッツで開業した。

フランス中部の地方。旧州。シェール，アンドル2県とロアレー，アンドルエロアール，クルーズ3県の一部を含む。中心都市はブールジュ。シェール川，アンドル川に潤される牧畜地域。カロリング朝時代に独立世襲伯領となり，1101年フランス王フィリップ1世に売却され，1360年フランス王ジャン2世によってアパナージュ (国王親族封) とされ，王子ジャン・ド・フランスがベリー公となり百年戦争の調停に努めた。 1601年王領地に併合された。
