The capital of the same-named region of the Russian Federation, located almost in the center of European Russia. Population 1,433,000 (1993). In 1932, it was renamed Gorky after the birthplace of the writer M. Gorky, but in 1990 it reverted to its current name. It is located at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers, about 439 km east of Moscow. It is the largest port on the Volga River and is a key point for water and land transportation, as well as a major economic and cultural center. Shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing, machine manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, and food manufacturing are thriving industries in the city, and it has nine universities and vocational schools, a large theater, and a museum.
