A general term for birds in the family Coliidae (order Mousebirds). This family is endemic to the African continent and is classified into one genus and six species. The name Mousebird comes from the fact that they resemble a mouse as they skillfully move around on trees and branches (illustration). Overall length is 30-36 cm. Their long tail makes up more than half of their overall length. They have a bushy crest on their head and a short, conical, and strong beak. Their legs are well developed. A distinctive feature of mousebirds is that the outer and hind toes of their feet can face either forward or backward, allowing them to grip branches in a variety of ways.
