A cold-tolerant perennial plant of the Commelinaceae family (APG classification: Commelinaceae). Native to Mexico, it was introduced to Japan in 1806 (Bunka 3). It is about 30 cm tall. The leaves are long lanceolate, somewhat thick, about 20 cm long, and pointed. The leaf base clasps the stem, dark green on the upper side and dark purple on the lower side. The flowers are white or pale blue, and grow in large numbers in two boat-shaped bracts emerging from the leaf axils. There are three sepals and three perianths, six stamens, and an inferior ovary. It is also called Shikinran (purple orchid), and is cultivated as an ornamental plant. The epidermal cells on the underside of the leaves are known to be used as a physiological experimental material for plants.
