A deciduous tall tree of the elm family. It is endemic to the temperate zone of East Asia. Some trees reach a height of 30m, and have a beautiful shape with tall, spreading branches. Although it grows wild in mountainous areas, it is often planted on residential premises, and is a typical component of residential forests, especially in the Kanto Plain, creating a unique landscape. The leaves are stalked, irregularly shaped, and have sawtooth edges. They are monoecious, and the flowers bloom in spring, but are small and inconspicuous. The wood is hard and has beautiful grain, so it has been used since ancient times as a building material for temples and other buildings.
