Daiba - Daiba

Japanese: 台場 - だいば
Daiba - Daiba

The remains of a battery (fort) built in Tokyo Bay. Also called "Odaiba." In 1853 (Kaei 6), Egawa Hidetatsu (Tarozaemon), the magistrate of Nirayama, Izu, had these batteries built in preparation for the invasion of Edo by the American fleet. It took one year and three months to build the first to seventh batteries (the fourth and seventh batteries were unfinished). Each battery had an area of about 33,000 square meters and was surrounded by stone walls, with the entrance facing Edo. Currently, the remains of the third and sixth batteries remain, and were designated as the Shinagawa Battery Historic Site in 1926 (Taisho 15). The remains of the third battery were opened as a metropolitan water park in 1928 (Showa 3), and the remains of a jinya (camp) and gunpowder storehouse can be found within the park. With the completion of Ariake Wharf in 1968, the Third Battery was connected to the mainland by a levee. It also became part of reclaimed land No. 13 (Koto Ward), and is now the Third Battery Park within Odaiba Seaside Park. After the completion of the Rainbow Bridge on the Metropolitan Expressway in 1993 and the opening of the Yurikamome Waterfront New Transit Line in 1995, the area rapidly developed as part of the Tokyo Waterfront New City Center, with high-rise apartment buildings, elementary and junior high schools, television stations, hotels, shopping malls and more being built. To the south of the area is the Museum of Maritime Science, which opened in 1974. The Sixth Battery is a small island within Tokyo Port, but is not open to the public.
