A town in Yama County in the mid-west of Fukushima Prefecture. It occupies the southwestern slope of Mt. Bandai and the eastern part of the Aizu Basin. The central settlement of Otera developed as a post station on the Nihonmatsu Highway, and the Ban'etsu West Line runs through it. Rice and field crops are cultivated here. 福島県中西部，耶麻(やま)郡の町。磐梯山南西斜面と会津盆地東部を占め，中心集落の大寺(おおてら)は二本松街道の宿駅として発達，磐越西(ばんえつさい)線が通じる。米作，畑作を行う。東日本大震災で，町内において被害が発生。59.77km2。3761人（2010）。
