Class-based society (English: ständische Gesellschaft [Germany])

In a broad sense, all societies prior to the modern civil society based on the principle of "equality before the law" were class societies. However, the term is usually used to refer to societies in European history from roughly the 12th or 13th century to the end of the 18th century.
[Legal status]
One of the structural features of this society is that each individual is considered to belong to some class, and the various classes form a kind of hierarchy. Broadly speaking, the classes are generally clergy (monks), nobility, citizens, and peasants, but the clergy and nobility are usually further organized into several classes.

広く解釈すれば，〈法の前の平等〉原則に立つ近代市民社会より以前の諸社会は，すべて身分制社会である。しかし，ふつうには，ヨーロッパ史上，ほぼ12～13世紀から18世紀末ごろまでの社会について，この呼称が用いられる。
［法制上の諸身分］
　この社会の構造的な特徴の一つは，それぞれの個人がなんらかの身分集団に属するものとされ，いろいろな身分が一種の階層秩序(ヒエラルヒー)をなしているところにある。大きく分ければ，聖職者(僧侶)，貴族，市民，農民という諸身分が一般的であるが，聖職者身分や貴族身分は，さらにその内部でいくつかの階層に編成されているのがふつうである。
