In a broad sense, all societies prior to the modern civil society based on the principle of "equality before the law" were class societies. However, the term is usually used to refer to societies in European history from roughly the 12th or 13th century to the end of the 18th century. [Legal status] One of the structural features of this society is that each individual is considered to belong to some class, and the various classes form a kind of hierarchy. Broadly speaking, the classes are generally clergy (monks), nobility, citizens, and peasants, but the clergy and nobility are usually further organized into several classes.
