An industrial city in central Russia. It is located on the eastern slope of the central Ural Mountains, on the Tagil River. With a population of 434,000 (1993), it is the second largest city in Sverdlovsk Oblast. Mining of nearby iron mines began in 1721, and the city was established in 1725, becoming the center of the Ural steel industry. Currently, it is home to the Lenin Iron and Steel Works and the Ural Railway Car Factory, the former of which plays an important role in the production of high-quality steel, and the latter of which plays an important role in the production of large freight cars.
