A Germanic tribal state established by the Visigoths from southern France to the Iberian Peninsula between the 5th and 8th centuries. In German, it is called Reich der Westgoten. The Goths were a branch of East Germanic people, and to date their origin is believed to be in Scandinavia. They later migrated southwest, and around 230 they settled in the steppes on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea, during which time they split into two groups, east and west. They eventually entered Italy from the Balkans, and during the reign of Alaric I (reigned 395-410), they plundered Rome and other cities.
