There are four different uses of this word. (1) It refers to a group of boat owners, such as boat owners and boatmen, who come together to cooperate with each other in order to produce fish. In Mitsu, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, a group of boats called kumibune is used to catch mullet. In this case, when several boats cannot be gathered together to surround a school of fish, the organization and cooperative system is called funagumi. (2) It refers to a boat association formed by boat owners who catch the same fish species in order to restrict the number of fishing boats and exclude others in order to monopolize fishery production.
