A major German integrated steel manufacturer known for Mannesmann seamless steel pipes. Its predecessor was the Mannesmann Steel Pipe Company, founded in 1890, which absorbed coal mines in the 1920s and became an integrated steel manufacturer in 1929. It changed its name to its current one in 1952. Since the 1980s, the company has diversified by incorporating companies such as Demark, and has handled machinery and plants, steel pipes, electrical equipment, and automotive parts, and its communications business has grown to become the second largest in the country. Headquarters in Dusseldorf. In October 1999, the company acquired Orange, a major British mobile phone company. Vodafone AirTouch (the world's largest mobile phone company), fearing Mannesmann's market expansion, launched a takeover bid. It attracted attention as a major takeover of the European mobile phone market, but in February 2002, Mannesmann was acquired by Vodafone AirTouch by mutual agreement between the two parties.

マンネスマン式シームレス鋼管で知られるドイツの大手銑鋼一貫メーカー。1890年設立のマンネスマン鋼管会社が前身で1920年代に炭鉱を吸収,1929年銑鋼一貫メーカーに。1952年現名に変更。1980年代以降デマーク会社などを傘下に組み込んで多角化し,機械・プラントを筆頭に鋼管,電機,自動車部品などを扱い,特に通信事業は国内第2位にまで成長した。本社デュッセルドルフ。1999年10月,イギリスの携帯電話通信大手オレンジ社を買収。マンネスマンの市場拡大を恐れたイギリスのボーダフォン・エアタッチ(世界最大の携帯電話会社)は,TOB(株式公開買付け)に乗り出した。欧州の携帯電話市場をめぐる大型買収劇として注目されたが,2002年2月両者の合意によりマンネスマンはボーダフォン・エアタッチに買収された。
