Sata [town] - Sata
An old town in Kimotsuki District, at the southern tip of the Osumi Peninsula in southern Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous. Cape Sata and the coast of Kagoshima Bay are part of Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park). Sata beef and Ponkan oranges are local specialties. There is a natural habitat of cycads (a special natural monument), and the Sata Former Botanical Garden (historic site), established by the Satsuma Domain. In March 2005, it merged with Nejime Town, Kimotsuki District, to become a town, Minami Osumi Town. Area: 125.53 km2 . Population: 3,772 (2003).

鹿児島県南部,大隅半島の南端の肝属(きもつき)郡の旧町。大部分は山地。佐多岬と鹿児島湾岸が霧島屋久国立公園(現・霧島錦江湾国立公園)に属する。佐多牛とポンカンを特産。ソテツ自生地(特別天然記念物),薩摩藩が設けた佐多旧薬園(史跡)がある。2005年3月肝属郡根占町と合併し町制,南大隅町となる。125.53km2。3772人(2003)。
