[Died] July 10, 1357. Perugia Professor of law at the universities of Bologna, Pisa, and Perugia. Known as the father of private international law. Instead of the commentary school, which had many shortcomings in terms of systematic and historical research and practical application of law, he created a new school of jurisprudence that systematized law using the deductive method of scholastic philosophy and interpreted and revised various regulations to make them practical. This is also called the late commentary school or the commentary school. His authority was so great that it was said, "If you are not a follower of Bartholus, you are not a lawyer."

ボローニャ，ピサ，ペルージアの各大学の法学教授。国際私法の祖と称される。法の体系的，歴史的研究と法の実用化という点で欠点の多かった註釈学派に代って，スコラ哲学の演繹法を用いて法を体系化し，各種の規定を実用化するための解釈，修正を行う新しい法律学を創設した。これを後期註釈学派とも註解学派ともいう。「バルトルスの徒にあらざれば，法律家にあらず」とまでいわれるほど，彼の権威は高かった。
