An old town in Mima County in the north-central part of Tokushima Prefecture. The main settlement is on the terraces of the Handa River, a tributary of the Yoshino River, and the Tokushima Line runs through it. Most of the area is mountainous, and oysters, konjac, and tea are local specialties. It is known for producing somen noodles. It also has manufacturing activities such as sewing. In the past, there were many woodworkers in the area, and it was known for lacquerware (handa lacquerware). 徳島県中北部,美馬(みま)郡の旧町。主集落は吉野川の支流半田川の段丘上にあり,徳島線が通じる。大半は山地で,カキ,コンニャク,茶を特産する。そうめんの生産で知られる。縫製などの工業も行う。かつては木地師が多く,漆器(半田塗)で知られた。2005年3月美馬郡貞光町,一宇村と合併し町制,つるぎ町となる。51.52km2。5602人(2003)。
