A plectrum instrument found in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. European name. Also called lamellaphone. Common names in Africa include mbira/mbira, kalimba, likembe, sanza, and kisanji. The basic structure is a set of tuned, thin tongues made of metal, bamboo, or other plants, attached to a resonator or plate of a box or gourd so that one end vibrates freely. The tip of the tongue is plucked with the thumbs and index fingers of both hands to produce a sound. Many are modified to produce a swaying sound by attaching a metal ring loosely to the base of the tongue, or small pieces of shells or metal to the resonator or plate. It is primarily intended for solo enjoyment, but may also be played in ensembles. →Related topics: Sanza | Marimba | Mbira Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
