...A harness is placed under the reverse ring, and often has a ring attached to it to hold a spear mark (Figure 1). Also, since bending the body in a cross shape would interfere with stabbing, many swords have a plain spear with an iron hook attached under the harness, giving the handle a cross shape; these are called "hooked spears." The handles of the Edo period were called tachiuchi, and the part where the stem goes in is wrapped in a thousand layers or painted with aogaitataki, and the lower part is wrapped in a turnip wrap with hemp thread to stop the blood flow.
