A former town in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies a plateau bordering the north of Kumamoto City. It produces rice, tobacco, and watermelons, and also raises livestock. It is home to the Kumamoto Livestock Farm, and is served by the Kumamoto Electric Railway. In recent years, it has been developed into a residential area. 熊本県北部，菊池郡の旧町。熊本市の北に接する台地を占める。米，タバコ，スイカを産し，畜産も行う。熊本種畜牧場などがあり，熊本電鉄が通じる。近年，宅地化が進む。2006年２月，菊池郡合志町と合併し市制，合志市となる。24.28km2。２万8100人（2003）。
