A former town in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies a plateau bordering the north of Kumamoto City. It produces rice, tobacco, and watermelons, and also raises livestock. It is home to the Kumamoto Livestock Farm, and is served by the Kumamoto Electric Railway. In recent years, it has been developed into a residential area.
