Locarno - English spelling of Locarno

A city in the canton of Ticino in south-central Switzerland. Facing Lake Maggiore, it has the warmest climate in Switzerland, and coupled with beautiful scenery, it has been attracting many tourists since the 19th century. The average annual temperature is 3°C higher than the tourist city of Lugano in the same canton. The population is 14,417 (2001), but more than doubles during the summer tourist season. Many Germanic Swiss and elderly Germans move here to enjoy the rest of their lives. Only a few people speak Italian, so to be successful here one must be good at German.

スイス中南部、ティチーノ州の都市。マッジョーレ湖に臨み、美しい風光と相まってスイスではもっとも気候温暖な都市で、19世紀以来、観光客を多く集めている。同州の観光都市ルガノより年平均気温で3℃も高い。人口は1万4417（2001）であるが、夏季の観光シーズンには倍以上になる。ゲルマン系スイス人やドイツ人の老人がここに移住して余生を楽しむ。イタリア語を話す人は少数であり、ここで活躍するためにはドイツ語をよくすることが条件とされる。
