A Greek grammarian from 2nd century Alexandria. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was revered as an authority on grammar from ancient times, the Middle Ages, and the early Renaissance. He is said to have written over 20 volumes, but only 4 of them remain, dealing with pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and syntax, with the syntax volume also containing the essence of Apollonius' grammar. Greek grammar was first taught as an academic subject by Dionysius of Thrace in the 2nd century BC, but Apollonius rejected popular myths, clarified the functions of words, and developed a theory of parts of speech and syntax based on grammatical principles, building grammar on an academic foundation.
