Saint born in Asia Minor in the late 3rd century and became bishop of Myra in Lycia. His birth and death years and life are unknown. He is also known as "Nicholas of Bari" because his remains were moved to Bari, Italy in the 11th century. There are many good deeds and miracles about him, such as the story of him throwing his purse to three poor girls who could not marry, the story of him calming a rough sea and saving a sailor, and the story of him resuscitating a child who had been kidnapped and soaked in a tub. His feast day is December 6th, and in ancient times, gifts were delivered to children on the eve of the day. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
