American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. Known as Count Basie. A pianist from the Harlem Stride movement, influenced by F. Waller. Based in Kansas City, he played an active role as a big band pianist in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1937, he returned to New York with the Basie Orchestra, which achieved success. The band included top-notch players such as tenor saxophonist Lester Young (1909-1959) and trumpeter Buck Clayton (1911-1992), and left behind many illustrious performances.
