American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. Known as Count Basie. A pianist from the Harlem Stride movement, influenced by F. Waller. Based in Kansas City, he played an active role as a big band pianist in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1937, he returned to New York with the Basie Orchestra, which achieved success. The band included top-notch players such as tenor saxophonist Lester Young (1909-1959) and trumpeter Buck Clayton (1911-1992), and left behind many illustrious performances. The band continued its activities after World War II, producing many excellent newcomers.

米国のジャズ・ピアノ奏者，作曲家，バンド・リーダー。〈カウント・ベーシーCount Basie〉として知られる。ハーレムの〈ストライド派〉出身のピアノ奏者で，F.ウォーラーに影響を受けている。1920年―1930年代にはカンザス・シティを本拠地に，ビッグ・バンドのピアノ奏者として活躍した。1937年，ベーシー楽団を率いてニューヨークに戻り，成功を収めた。テナー・サックスのレスター・ヤングLester Young〔1909-1959〕，トランペットのバック・クレイトンBuck Clayton〔1911-1992〕ら一流の奏者が在籍し，数々の名演奏を残している。第２次大戦後も楽団の活動を続け，多くのすぐれた新人を輩出した。
