In 1853-54, the water level of Lake Zurich in Switzerland dropped abnormally, leaving behind countless piles standing on the lake bottom, with a huge amount of Neolithic pottery, stone tools, and wooden products scattered around. This triggered the discovery of similar settlement ruins in Switzerland, Germany, and northern Italy, mainly in the Alps. At the beginning of research, it was understood that these were rows of houses standing on the lake surface, and in Japan the name "lake dwellings" (translated from "lake dwellings") became widespread. However, the currently most widely accepted theory is that piles were erected on the lakeside and houses were built on top of them, making it inappropriate to call them lake dwellings.

　1853‐54年，スイスのチューリヒ湖の水面が異常に下がったことから，湖底に無数の杭が立って残り，周囲に莫大な量の新石器時代の土器，石器，木製品などが散乱している状況が見いだされたことを契機として，アルプスを中心とするスイス，ドイツ，北イタリアで，続々同種の集落遺跡が見いだされた。研究の当初は，湖水面上に家が立ち並んだものと理解されており，日本でもlake dwellingを訳した湖上住居の名が普及した。しかし，現在では湖畔に杭を立てその上に家を設けたとする説が最も有力であって湖上住居と呼ぶことが不適当となっている。…
