Oe Chisato - Oe Chisato

Japanese: 大江千里 - おおえのちさと

A poet of the early Heian period. The third son of Otondo, a councilor of the Third Rank. His father Otondo is thought to be an illegitimate son of Prince Abo, and Ariwara no Narihira and Yukihira were Chisato's uncles. The Oe family was a scholarly family on par with the Sugawara family, and Chisato himself was a university student, but compared to Chifuru (his younger brother), Asatsuna, and Koretoki (his nephew), he was less highly regarded as a poet and had to settle for an unfortunate official position. In 903 (Engi 3), he was appointed Hyobu Taijo (Minister of War). On the other hand, he was highly esteemed as a poet, having participated in the "Prince Koresada's Household Poetry Contest" and the "Kanpyo Ontoki Kisai no Miya No Utaawase," and was commissioned by Emperor Uda to compile a collection of ancient and modern poems and presented him with the "Kudai Waka."

平安前期の歌人。参議従三位(じゅさんみ)音人(おとんど)の三男。父音人は阿保(あぼ)親王の落胤(らくいん)と考えられ、在原業平(ありわらのなりひら)・行平(ゆきひら)は千里の叔父にあたる。大江家は菅原(すがわら)家と並ぶ学問の家であり、彼自身大学学生(がくしょう)の出身であるが、千古(ちふる)（弟）や朝綱(あさつな)、維時(これとき)（甥(おい)）に比して詩人としての評価は劣り、不遇な官途に甘んじた。903年（延喜3）兵部大丞(ひょうぶたいじょう)を極官とする。反面、「是貞親王家歌合(これさだのみこのいえのうたあわせ)」「寛平御時后宮歌合(かんぴょうのおんとききさいのみやのうたあわせ)」に出詠し、宇多(うだ)帝からは古今の歌の類聚(るいじゅう)を委嘱されて『句題和歌』を献上するなど、歌人としての声望は高いものがあった。
