Kokura weaving

Japanese:
Kokura weaving

The name of a cotton fabric originally woven in the Kokura region of Kyushu (now part of Kitakyushu City). Initially, it was a warp-ridged weave with tightly packed warp threads and was used for men's obi and hakama fabrics, but later on, various fabrics were produced, including Aya Kokura, which uses a four-ply twill weave, Shimofuri Kokura, which uses navy and white heathered threads, and Gas Kokura, which uses gas threads. As the fabric is strong, it was widely used for school uniforms and work clothes before World War II. Production began in Kokura, but in the late Meiji period it spread to Okayama and Saitama regions, and Okayama is currently the main production area. However, with the advancement of synthetic fibers, it has replaced cotton fabrics and the material is changing.
