Pope of the Roman Empire (reigned 858-867) and saint. He accelerated the expansion of papacy and the separation of the Eastern and Western Churches by refusing to recognize the divorce of East Frankish King Lothair II and by interfering with the Church of Constantinople and excommunicating Patriarch Photius (863).
