Hetsugi Shozaemon

Year of birth: Unknown. Samurai of the early Edo period. Also written as Bekki Shozaemon. A former samurai of the Ono Domain in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), he received a stipend of 200 koku, but became a ronin and went to Edo, where he lectured military science at Shiba-Fudanotsuji. He was the mastermind behind the so-called Jo-o Incident. In September 1652, when the 27th anniversary of the death of the wife of the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, Sugen-in, was held at Zojo-ji Temple in Shiba, he gathered his comrades, including Hayashi Toemon and Toki Yozaemon, and set fire to the towns of Edo, attacked Zojo-ji Temple, stole the gold and silver that had been donated as incense, and planned to assassinate the senior councilors who were attending the ceremony. However, an informant, Nagashima Gyobuzaemon, came forward and he was captured just before the ceremony and crucified along with his group.

江戸前期の武士。別木庄(荘)左衛門とも書く。元越前(福井県)大野藩士で,200石の禄を取ったが,浪人して江戸に出,芝・札の辻で軍学を講じたという。いわゆる承応事件の首謀者で,承応1(1652)年9月,2代将軍徳川秀忠夫人崇源院の二十七回忌の法要が芝増上寺で行われた際,林戸右衛門,土岐与左衛門らの同志を糾合して江戸の町々に放火し,増上寺を襲撃して香奠の金銀を奪い,参列した老中を暗殺する計画を立てたが,密告者長島刑部左衛門が出て直前に捕らえられ,一味共々磔刑に処せられた。
