Abbreviated as COG. Gas obtained when coal is carbonized in a coke oven. The amount generated is about 300-400 m3 per ton of coal. The calorific value is about 5000 kcal/m3, and its main components are hydrogen 50-54% (volume, same below), methane 30-33%, carbon monoxide 6-8%, and hydrocarbons such as ethylene 2-4%. Some of the coke oven gas is used as fuel for the coke ovens, but it is also used as in-house fuel at steelworks, as city gas at gas plants, and as a chemical raw material at chemical plants.
