"Edo Murasaki Tokugawa Genji"

Japanese: 《江戸紫徳川源氏》 - えどむらさきとくがわげんじ
"Edo Murasaki Tokugawa Genji"

...During the Edo period, dramatization was not permitted due to the scandals related to the Tokugawa family, but after the Meiji Restoration, it was often dramatized, including Kawatake Mokuami's "The Tale of Hourai Soga Island" in 1870 (Meiji 3). Major works include Katsu Genzo's "Edo Murasaki Tokugawa Genji" (September 1881, Nakaza, Osaka), Kawatake Shinshichi III's "Enoshima Shingo: The Wave Boat Ejima New Words" (January 1883, Harukiza, Tokyo), Migita Torahiko's "Ejima Ikushima" (September 1916, Imperial Theater, Tokyo), and Masamune Hakucho's "Ejima Ikushima" (November 1953, Hitotsubashi Auditorium, Tokyo, later renamed "Dream Takato"). A famous example is the dance drama "Ejima Ikushima" by Hasegawa Shigure (November 1913, Dance Research Society, Tokyo Kabukiza), in which Shingoro, who is exiled to Miyakejima, dreams of having fun with Ejima, and when he wakes up, he becomes mad after getting involved with a traveling merchant and a female diver who resembles Ejima.
