Nicolaus of Ultricuria

Japanese: ニコラウス[オートルクールの]（英語表記）Nicolaus de Ultricuria

French scholastic theologian, c. 1300-1350. His French name was Nicolas d'Autrecourt. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Paris, but is said to have been declared a heretic in 1346 and fled to the court of Louis IV of Bavaria. Armed with the theory of the sensory origin of cognition and the law of contradiction, he criticized the positions of Aristotle and the Averroes school, arguing that their main theories had no demonstrable certainty and were merely probabilistic. Contrary to what is often reported, he did not deny the law of causality itself, but merely its demonstrable possibility.
