A Jewish scholar mentioned in the Gospel of John. He was a member of the Pharisee sect that opposed Jesus, but he visited Jesus secretly at night and questioned him, and Jesus taught him about true new birth (3:1-21). He seems to have been favorable to Jesus' activities (7:50-51), and after Jesus' execution, he is said to have brought spices for his burial (19:39).
