Heisenberg and DD Ivanenko independently proposed the idea that the atomic nucleus is a multi-body system consisting of protons and neutrons, and established the basis of nuclear physics. In the same year, JD Cockcroft and ETS Walton succeeded in creating a completely artificial nuclear reaction by blasting protons accelerated in an accelerator they had built onto lithium. This success made it much easier to create a wide variety of nuclear reactions using particles accelerated in an accelerator than had been possible before, and became the starting point for advancing research into nuclear physics and even elementary particle physics. …
