During the printing process, the proof copy is compared with the manuscript to correct typographical errors, omissions, inaccuracies, inconsistencies, clumsiness, differences in layout, etc. Depending on the number of times, it is called the first proof, second proof, third proof, etc., and when proofreading is complete, it is called a final proof, and when there are only a few corrections to be made and the printing company is given responsibility for the final proof, it is called a responsible final proof. Proofreading errors are difficult to eradicate, and there are many anecdotes about proofreading errors. A famous proofreading error is the Adulterous Bible, in which the "not" in the Ten Commandments of Moses was omitted. Another type of proofreading is illustration proofreading, which involves correcting single- or multi-color illustrations.

Calibration. Also called inspection or correction. Comparing the scale of a measuring instrument with the correct standard value to find the correction value. If the indicated value of a measuring instrument is I and the standard value is S , then I - S = E is the instrument error, -E is the correction value, and the value S / I = C is the correction coefficient. Correction values or correction coefficients are calculated for each scale, and a table of these is called a calibration table, and a graph of these is called a calibration curve. キャリブレーション。検定また補正ともいう。測定器の目盛りを，正しい基準量と比較して補正値を知ること。測定器の指示値を I，基準値を Sとすると，I－S＝Eを測定器の器差，－Eを補正値，S/I＝Cの値を補正係数という。各目盛りごとに補正値または補正係数を出し，これを表にしたものを校正表，グラフにしたものを校正曲線といい，各測定器の校正のたびに測定器に付属させておいて，それにより指示値から正しい値を求める。なおこれは以前は「較正」と書かれたが，当用漢字の音訓制定以来「校正」になった。
