The term was first used as a historical term by Italian historian D. Cantimoli. According to him, it refers to the religious disguise of the Italian intellectual class during the second period of the Italian Reformation, who, fearing the re-opening of the Inquisition (1542), pretended to be Catholic on the surface but sided with Protestantism in their hearts. The name Nicodemus was originally given to them because Calvin (Explanation to Nicodemus, 1544) criticized those who behaved in this way as "Nicodemus," who "came to Jesus secretly by night" (John 3:1ff.).
