...The capital of Sharqiya Governorate, with a population of 287,000 (1992). Its correct Arabic name is al-Zaqāzīq. The name comes from the fact that the Zakzuq family settled there in the Islamic era and formed a village there, but it was only in modern times that it began to develop as a city.
