1856‐85 A Syrian Christian. After receiving his education in Damascus and Beirut, he fled to Egypt, where he published the newspaper Misr, which he later continued to publish under a different name in Paris. He was opposed to sectarian nationalism from start to finish, and spoke out on issues such as Arab unity, the Arab East, and the idea of a "homeland." He considered education to be an urgent matter, saying, "There is no homeland without freedom, and no freedom without morality." He was part of the first generation of Arab nationalists, who went beyond religious sects to advocate for the political advancement of the nation.
