City Lights - Machi no Hi (English)

American film. Directed by Charles Chaplin. Produced in 1931. A silent film released in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when talkies were becoming mainstream. Chaplin plays a homeless man who falls in love with a poor blind flower girl. The blindness of the character is a device that accentuates the drama in this silent film. The only sounds used are sound effects and music composed by Chaplin himself. As talkies became widespread and popular, this film expressed a comedy and tragic story through images, which received high praise from critics and was a box office success. The trademark costumes, moustache, and pantomime are still intact. This film once again made the world aware of Chaplin's creativity as a director and his acting skills as an actor. At the end of the story, a series of close-up shots of the protagonist (Chaplin) and the flower girl's faces convey the complex feelings of each other through images, expressing the sadness within the tragicomedy. The filming took more than a year and was interrupted many times along the way. It is clear that this was a silent film that Chaplin had struggled to make as the talkie era was just beginning. Released in Japan in 1934 (Showa 9).

アメリカ映画。監督チャールズ・チャップリン。1931年作品。トーキー映画が主流となりつつあった1920年代後半から1930年代初頭に発表された無声映画。チャップリンが盲目の貧しい花売り娘に恋をする浮浪の男を演じている。盲目という設定が、無声による本作品においてドラマを際だたせる装置となっている。音の使用は効果音と、チャップリン自身が作曲した楽曲のみ。トーキー映画が浸透し人気を博すなか、映像で喜劇と悲哀の物語を表現し、批評家たちから高い評価を受けるとともに、興行的にも成功した。トレードマークの衣装や口ひげ、パントマイムは健在。監督としての作家性、俳優としての演技力を改めて世に知らしめた作品である。物語の結末部分では、主人公（チャップリン）と花売り娘との顔のクローズアップショットの連続により、お互いの複雑な心情を映像で伝え、悲喜劇のなかの哀切さを表現した。撮影期間が1年以上にも及び、途中何度も中断したという。トーキー映画時代に突入したなかでの、チャップリンの苦悩の末の無声映画作品であることがうかがえる。1934年（昭和9）日本公開。
