An industrial city in the Saône-et-Loire department in central-eastern France. Population 29,000 (1990). Coal has been produced in this region since early times, but it developed rapidly after the Schnödel brothers established a steel company in 1836, and it is known as one of the centers of the steel and machinery manufacturing industries in France to this day, and the Schnödel family reigns supreme.
