A city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. Population 278,600 (2000). Located on the alluvial plain on the right bank of the Rhine, the city is bordered by vast forests to the north and south. The city center, which is considered a typical example of a planned city during the absolute monarchy period, dates back to 1715 when Margrave of Baden Karl Wilhelm (reigned 1709-38) built a hunting lodge. Roads radiate in 32 directions from the lodge, which has a vast garden behind it, and the city area is located in front of the lodge. In addition to the Federal Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, the city is home to federal research institutes for river engineering and food, various state agencies, a university, a music college, and other educational institutions. In addition, various industries, mainly oil refineries, are located around the Rhine port in the west, and the federal government's nuclear research center is located in the forested area in the north.
