…A Christian sect that arose in North Africa in the 4th century. Its first leader was Donatus (died 355). After the death of Mensurius, the bishop of Carthage, Caecilianus was chosen, but Felix, who had ordained him, was opposed by 70 bishops and priests of Numidia on the grounds of treachery during the persecution of Diocletian. This resulted in a double election (312). Those who supported the latter elected Donatus in place of Majorinus, who died shortly after, and, citing the authority of Cyprian, the martyr of Carthage, declared the sacraments performed by the clergy who had refused to confess their faith during the persecution to be invalid. …

…4世紀に北アフリカで起こったキリスト教の分離派で，ドナトゥスDonatus(355没)が最初の指導者。カルタゴの司教メンスリウスMensuriusの死後，カエキリアヌスCaecilianusが選ばれたが，彼を叙任したフェリクスFelixはディオクレティアヌス帝の迫害のときに裏切り行為があったという理由で，ヌミディアの70人の司教･司祭が反対し，この叙任を無効としてマヨリヌスMajorinusを立てた，という二重選挙があった(312)。後者を支持する人々は，まもなく死んだマヨリヌスのあとにドナトゥスを立てるとともに，カルタゴの殉教者キプリアヌスの権威をかかげ，迫害の際に信仰告白をこばんだ聖職者の執行するサクラメントは無効であると宣言した。…
