A post town on the Nakasendo road. Located at the northern end of the Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture, in the Middle Ages it was important as a northern control point for the Kiso clan, and a guard post was established there. It was designated a post station in 1601 (Keicho 6), and the guard post became a sub-checkpoint when the Fukushima checkpoint was established. With an area of 4 cho 6 ken and 124 houses, it was a post town with a strong rural character. The checkpoint controlled women and children traveling by side roads without going through the Fukushima checkpoint, and the smuggling of timber and horses, which were controlled goods in the Kiso Valley. In 1889 it merged with Narai village to become Narakawa village. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
